Ovation TV | The Swell Season: Live from the Artists Den

Posted by admin on March 9th, 2010 and filed under artists | 25 Comments »

Built in 1906 as a shelter for young wayward or orphaned girls, the Good Shepherd Center Chapel in Seattle provided a new sort of haven for two hundred Artists Den guests on a crisp autumn night. Now a Historic Seattle landmark and performance space, the intimate chapel is framed by high wooden arches, which were lit by candlelight while the latest incarnation of the Swell Season — led by Academy Award winners, Glen Hansard and backed by Marketa Irglova on piano and two of Hansard’s band mates from the Frames on bass and violin — gave a special performance of their melodic, original songs, several of which were featured in the Fox Searchlight film Once.

Art:21 | Gabriel Orozco | “Samurai Tree”

Posted by admin on March 6th, 2010 and filed under artist prints | 4 Comments »

EXCLUSIVE: Gabriel Orozco discusses recent paintings from his ongoing “Samurai Tree” series, including the works “Fugaz”, “Tuttifruti” and “Red Roots” (all 2008), and the computer animation “Dandelion Animation” (2008), shown as part of the exhibition “Gabriel Orozco: Recent Work” (2008) at Marian Goodman Gallery in New York.

Gabriel Orozcos sculptures and photographs disrupt conventional notions of reality. Drawing our attention to slips in logic, philosophical games, and hidden geometries, Orozco uncovers the extraordinary aspects of the seemingly everyday. His use of humble materials and means (graphite on bone, a ball of clay, a 35mm camera) engages the imagination through its disarming simplicity and intimacy.

Gabriel Orozco is featured in the Season 2 (2003) episode “Loss & Desire” of the “Art:21—Art in the Twenty-First Century” television series on PBS.

EEOOY::How-to-make contemporary installation art::Ep.1 Part1

Posted by admin on January 24th, 2010 and filed under contemporary artist | 22 Comments »

SERIES DESCRIPTION

Each & Every One of You (EEOOY) is a mock TV show pilot that teaches ordinary people how to make contemporary installation art. If these words strike fear into your heart or make you cringe with memories of seeing contemporary art and wondering what the it was all about, this show is for you!

Inspired by the fifties, celebrity art instructor Jon Gnagy who taught thousands of pioneer NBC TV viewers how to draw hokie landscapes. EEOOY host Andy Jenny show how fun and easy it can be to make contemporary art using his Four Installation Art Directives™.

EEOOY is a sincere but irreverent 1980’s-cable-TV-style show written and acted by ex-art critic Don Goodes. Unlike any other show on the subject, it embraces rather than tries to sidestep a central paradox: contemporary art is simultaneously profoundly significant and completely irrelevant. The show is funny and educational. Where ever EEOOY has been shown, in art galleries, museums and on cable TV in Canada, the US and Spain, it has become a cult-classic.

Two 30 minute pilots that were co-produced at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta Canada in the late nineties, as part of the Pop Sub n’Mass Culture Residency.

EPISODE DESCRIPTION

THE WEIRDNESS INSTALLATION EPISODE is a madcap creation involving a dirty old stuffed dog, the wanton scattering of lint and much more. Anne Marie (Anne Marie Léger) is there with viewer letters. As always, the critic (Caterina Pizanias) drops by to interpret Andy’s latest creation. And, as a bonus, you’ll visit the Art Shopping Channel (hosted by Lyle Ashton Harris and Anne Davis Mulford). Original soundtrack by Pierre Allard and Michel Gionet.

Ovation TV | Patty Griffin: Live from the Artists Den

Posted by admin on January 18th, 2010 and filed under artists | 25 Comments »

AT THE ANGEL ORENSANZ FOUNDATION IN NEW YORK
Patty Griffin’s new album, Children Running Through, was released on a bitterly cold winter day in New York City that turned into an even colder night, with temperatures dropping to 9 degrees Fahrenheit as devoted fans huddled together outside the Orensanz Foundation for the Arts for a chance to see Griffin perform songs from the album for the first time. Inside, the historic building’s neo-gothic arches were lit with the warm glow of candlelight as Griffin stepped into the packed room to play a private Artists Den concert, celebrating her record’s release and offering a sneak preview of her extensive spring tour. Griffin’s crystal-clear voice filled the room with newly penned songs (a handwritten lyrics sheet sat perched on the piano when she took a break from her guitar to play it) as well as Griffin classics, accompanied by new band members and longtime players alike. A special treat on some songs was the addition of legendary keyboardist Ian McLagan (Small Faces, The Rolling Stones) — who appeared for this night only — and a 5-piece string section. At the end of the evening, the lucky audience walked back out into the biting cold braced with the warmth of an unforgettable night.
