Baldung used paintings for his art. He used wood work to do his work. He was so skilled and was thought to be the best student of Albrecht Dürer.

They are used to tighten the canvas. They are tapped into the slots in the corners where the stretcher bars meet on the back side of the canvas. It is perplexing why they never give you instructions when you buy the stretched canvas on what they are and how to use them.

Per "About.com Painting" at http://painting.about.com/od/paintingforbeginners/a/canvaskeys.htm, "Those bits of wood that come with a canvas are called canvas keys, and are for ensuring the canvas remains tight."

They are the wedge pieces for tightening the canvas even more.
This should be done before any paint or gesso are applied to the canvas.
