In the presidential oil portrait of JFK why did the artist paint him looking down and with arms crossed?

In the presidential oil portrait of JFK why did the artist paint him looking down and with arms crossed as opposed to other paintings done of US Presidents in sitting or standing positions facing the viewer?

The artist, Aaron Shikler, based the portrait on a White House photo taken when he was in deep-thought during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

An interesting pose, and YES a contrast to other portraits.

How can I become a better portrait artist (acrylic painting)?

by teaching myself at home …

Practice is the key. Take photos out of magazines, or old photos of yourself or your family, or even better if you can get someone you know to sit for you, and just copy them down onto the canvas. Acrylic isn’t the best medium to use because it isn’t easy to blend on canvas, and it doesn’t give a very natural look that you normally want for portraits. You could try using oil or water colour instead, oil’s easier but quite expensive, and watercolour’s cheap but you have to be fast.If you really want to work in acrylic then I’d reccommend havig tons of colours mixed up in various shades and using lots of different tones gradiated so as not to make the shading look sudden and blocky. Light and shade are the most important parts of painting, so when you’re trying to get down the shape of a face, don’t do outlines of the nose and mouth like a cartoon, use shadow and highlights to bring out the shape. If you can’t make out a feature just using light and shade, you’ve not done it right.
Best of luck.

A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Woman?

Does such a book exist? I’m looking for a coming of age story of an author/artist from the female perspective akin to Joyce’s novel or Dickens’ David Copperfield.
Book lover: That’s exactly why I’m asking. I working on a novel and find myself falling into that very trap with my female protagonist. I want to gain some perspective so she has more depth. Then again, men have been trying to figure out women for thousands of years with little success, so it may be a fool’s quest. Thanks for the suggestions.

I would love to read one too. What I really dislike about many male authors though is that they never get women/girls right! Their heroines are usually innocent damsels in distress or femme fatales. Like honestly… Give me one heroine from a male author who we REAL females can relate to. That’s why I prefer women writers because they get it right!

A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Woman = Try

–JANE EYRE by Charlotte Bronte

–LITTLE WOMEN by Louisa May Alcott

–ANNE OF GREEN GABLES by L.M. Montgomery

(I can only think of a few male authors like Nicholas Sparks who portray women in a more realistic light.)
