Can any artist out there recommend a good brand/size of paint to cover large areas of canvas. Im talking 4 x 4 feet. looking for something that I could use on a couple paintings and not have to buy a new tube just to start a new painting. Lately i’ve been experimenting with house paint – great and plentiful for covering large areas, but im not particularly liking the quality i’ve been getting. Any suggestions would be great. thanks.
It would help if we know what kind of paints you want to use, acrylic, oil, watercolor. You can buy big jars of acrylic paint in art stores, they are prices differently too. Some of the least expensive brands don’t have good coverage. I go to Utrecht for the big jars, some of them are like 1/2 gallon. Oil paints you can buy in 200ml tubes, You can go with the Blick brand which is the least expensive and has good color saturation. Georgian by Daler Rowley has probably the best value in their 200ml. Winton has some but I found them inferior to the other brands, their artist series is good but more expensive. Since you are painting on canvas I don’t think you are using watercolors, they are mostly used for smaller works and are used on paper, though I have seen huge water color paintings, but I have never seen big tubes of watercolor paint.
I paint large scale paintings usually and I use oil paint, the Georgians come in handy especially in the beginning stages.

If you want artist quality paints they will all come in smaller sizes. The higher the concentration of pigment the more expensive the paint.
That might be the reason you are not happy with the quality you are getting as house paint will most likely be not suitable for a canvas.
I wold suggest spending a little on good quality and using an extender (if you are using acrylics or oils as I would guess) so you have a masterpiece that would last you for years to come.
Good luck!

I take a bottle of white gesso and squirt some in a big cup and i take any acrylic paint color and squirt some in. Mix it , and then i take a foam brush to paint the whole canvas.
