How does the artist transfer their sketch on paper to the canvas?

Or do they directly sketch or paint the image to the canvas.
Such as: Vincent, Monet, Rembrandt etc.

I would use graphite paper. You can write over the sketch and then it puts the image on the canvas. It is hard to explain. You tape down the graphite paper and the image onto the canvas.

they ways I have heard of or tried include:

    - just sketch it again on canvas (my usual method)

    - Using a grid. Make a grid on your sketch and make a similar grid on the canvas then sketch in using the grid as reference (very common)

    - put your sketch in one of those light projector thingies, project it onto your canvas. (expensive machines)

    - making the sketch on paper the same size as canvas then tracing it (you can punch tiny holes along the paper sketch and run charcoal or charcoal powder across the holes)

You can place carbon paper (black side against canvas) underneath the original, then trace the original linework with a ballpoint pen or dull pencil. I used this technique to make a large mural recently.

In architecture school we would also simply turn pencil sketches over and rub firmly with a pencil to make the original drawing transfer onto a new surface (although it would be reversed).

I use a Pantograph. This is a great gadget that is relatively inexpensive. You can usually find these on eBay.com . You can also use these to enlarge or reduce your sketches when transferring them to another paper.

An artist paints directly onto their prepared support in the traditional manner of commencing with an underpainting in something like a thin burnt sienna wash & keeps building up their image until completed. A hobby painter can draw in pencil or use a transfer method but the act of painting doesn’t make them an artist.
